Latin American bond ETF research: methodology

Published · Research

Checked 16 October 2026. This is a selected-product access and structure comparison, not a recommendation or an exhaustive census. Names are shown because the question asks which ETFs provide the exposure. No frozen Rogha dataset was changed. Live documents may update.

Opinion column: Emiel van den Heiligenberg, “In AI-dominated markets, LatAm debt is a diversifier”, published 15 October 2026. Its chart identifies JPMorgan GBI-EM Global Diversified regional indices and USD returns. We do not reproduce its chart, independently validate its regional return claim, or transfer that return to a euro UCITS ETF.

Calculations and limits

State Street selected LatAm subtotal: 8.04 + 7.10 + 3.61 + 1.30 + 1.17 = 21.22%. A 10% portfolio allocation gives 2.122% portfolio exposure at those weights. Definition for this calculation: Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Chile; not an assertion that all regional issuers appear in the benchmark. VanEck Mexico + Brazil = 13.82%; no full regional total inferred from its Other/Cash bucket. iShares issuer weights are not treated as complete look-through geography.

Duration illustration: −5.08 × 0.01 ≈ −5.08% price effect, a first-order parallel-yield-shift approximation, not a forecast; ignores convexity, FX, credit changes and income. No performance ranking is made because dates, benchmarks and currencies differ.

Search covered dedicated Latin American debt and local-government UCITS routes, broad iShares, VanEck, State Street and Vanguard emerging-market strategies, and historical Mexican sovereign products. Other providers, active strategies and share classes may exist. UCITS status, Irish domicile/registration and platform availability are different checks. US or locally listed non-UCITS funds and LatAm equity ETFs were excluded. Current broker execution, minimum dealing sizes, spreads and retail KID availability per account remain unverified.

No correlation matrix or backtest was calculated. A future quantitative study needs synchronised monthly EUR total returns, transparent FX conversion and distribution treatment, a sufficiently long history, rolling correlations and stress drawdowns. Broad-EM ETF results cannot establish isolated LatAm diversification. Do not assume that broad bond indices capture all inflation-linked or floating-rate segments discussed in the FT; instrument eligibility requires separate index-level verification.
