Identified sample, structure and cost comparison

Read the article

Four allocated-bullion ETCs form the core comparison. Xetra-Gold is a separate physically backed case because its assets include delivery claims and noteholders are unsecured. Selection illustrates legal and cost differences; it is not a ranking of the largest or best products. A separate EUR-hedged certificate is used only as a currency-policy contrast.

What the investor owns and how the claim is secured

These five instruments are debt securities or certificates, not UCITS ETF units. The first four provide secured claims through their respective legal structures. Security is distinct from the issuer’s physical possession of bullion. Limited recourse means claims depend on specified property and the applicable payment priorities; it does not guarantee full recovery.

Xetra-Gold’s current German prospectus expressly describes noteholder claims as unsecured and pari passu with other issuer creditors (PDF page 17, section 2.1.2; see also the ownership discussion). The English FAQ says investors acquire neither ownership nor a lien over the issuer’s gold. This document-based distinction is not a creditworthiness ranking. The 2026 prospectus is in German even though linked from an English downloads page; the older 2025 English translation was not substituted for it.

The custody chain also matters. The WisdomTree prospectus specifies trustee-held secured accounts. iShares and Invesco describe issuer accounts subject to security in favour of a trustee. Allocated bullion is identifiable metal held for the relevant account owner; it is not a personally assigned bar belonging to each retail security holder.

Physical backing and its limits

iShares’ same-date published aggregates show 9,259,707.585 fine ounces on its 12 October list against 9,259,134.78 disclosed security ounces, a difference of 572.805 ounces. This is a limited arithmetic comparison, not an independent audit or full bar-by-bar reconciliation. The Invesco file retrieved from its published URL is dated May, so it cannot certify October backing. WisdomTree page dates and retrieved bar dates differ; no same-day coverage ratio is asserted. Xetra-Gold’s September holdings table is rounded and separate from its October bar list.

The Invesco prospectus (PDF pages 34–35) describes temporary unallocated exposure during issuance, fee withdrawals and redemption, with a specified end-of-day residual limit. The swing-bar description aims to keep allocated bullion at least equal to certificate value. Those disclosures should be read together: “allocated” should not be rewritten as an assertion of zero operational or custody risk. WisdomTree’s factsheet/page says no metals lending for the selected products; no universal no-lending claim is made for every issuer.

Redemption is not the same as selling on exchange

SampleRedemption distinction
ANormal retail exit is exchange sale. Non-AP buy-back depends on an issuer notice and conditions; not a routine retail bar-delivery facility.
BPhysical settlement means transfer to a qualifying London unallocated metal account, directly or through an agent, subject to conditions and charges; not ordinary home delivery.
CPhysical redemption route subject to registered-holder/broker participation, minimums, deductions and bank delivery. Published service jurisdictions: UK, Germany and Switzerland; Irish delivery not established.
DProduct page states no physical delivery. Do not apply the Core product’s retail physical-redemption service to this separate ISIN.
EOne gram delivery claim per note through the investor’s bank, subject to procedure and delivery costs. Confirm broker support and destination.

Core physical delivery is explained in WisdomTree’s redemption instructions. It requires broker or registered-holder involvement, due diligence and the specified delivery route. Legal entitlement, service availability and a particular Irish broker’s support are separate questions.

Disclosed charges and investor costs

For a constant €20,000 holding, 0.12% is €24 and 0.39% is €78 per year: a €54 difference before other costs. This multiplies the disclosed rates by a constant holding and is not an exact invoice, net-return forecast or all-in comparison. Metal entitlement in the core products decreases to reflect charges. Do not compare unit prices or initial ounces per security as measures of cheapness.

Xetra-Gold’s official custody tariff between Clearstream and banks is 0.025% monthly, described as 0.30% annually plus VAT. The investor pays the amount agreed with their bank. It is not a universally payable 0.30% product TER and is not plotted as one. Spreads, commissions, platform charges, FX conversion and delivery costs require broker-specific evidence. No live spread study was performed.

Gold is priced in USD and the trading line is not a hedge

For the unhedged examples, a euro investor’s return reflects gold’s USD price and the USD/EUR conversion. With X defined as USD per EUR, EUR gold value equals USD gold value divided by X. Thus 1 + EUR return = (1 + USD gold return) / (1 + change in X), before fees and trading costs.

Gold move in USDChange in USD per EURGold return in EUR before fees
+10%+0%+10.00%
+10%+10%+0.00%
+0%+10%-9.09%
+0%-10%+11.11%

These are hypothetical arithmetic scenarios. Gold’s USD return and FX moves are not assumed independent. This describes currency translation, not ownership of a USD cash deposit. The same unhedged iShares ISIN has GBP, USD and EUR trading lines; changing line changes dealing currency, not the gold holding or hedge policy.

The separately reviewed Invesco Physical Gold EUR Hedged ETC (XS2183935274) explicitly uses an FX hedge. Its 31 August 2026 factsheet discloses a 0.12% fixed fee and 0.15% FX hedge fee, totalling 0.27% in disclosed fee rates. That sum does not capture every economic hedge effect: interest differentials, hedge implementation and residual exposure also matter. It is excluded from the unhedged tracking comparison. BYear to 31 August 202632.90%33.06%-0.16 percentage points
CYear to 31 August 202632.90%Not supplied in extracted tableNot calculated

These are issuer-published, rounded USD returns, not a new daily-series backtest. In calendar 2025, A and B each show 64.80% against 65.00% for their own published benchmark; C also reports 64.80%, but its extracted table supplies no separate benchmark row. B and C both report 32.90% for the year to 31 August 2026; B’s benchmark is 33.06%. This supports an illustration of similar spot-gold exposure, not exact equality or a five-product tracking ranking.

A difference of 0.20 percentage points when the benchmark gained 65% corresponds to a relative end-wealth shortfall of about 0.1212%, not a 0.20% fee. These measures must not be conflated. No comparable result is asserted for D or E; external custody bills would not necessarily appear in a quoted-price series. Annual return differences do not measure statistical tracking error. Daily observations, valuation-time alignment and a consistent benchmark are required for that.

Scope and research status

Gold-mining equities are claims on operating businesses, and futures strategies add contract, roll and collateral mechanics. Neither is pooled with this spot-bullion comparison. “UCITS eligible” in issuer documents is not “a UCITS ETF”; ETC is the applicable product label here. These securities are retained as a separate research supplement and have not been inserted into the Irish UCITS ETF directory.

Structure and disclosed-charge research is complete for this sample; the anonymous article is published with this supporting methodology. No directory update, tax conclusion, broker availability certification or safety ranking is claimed. Final execution-level redemption terms require the applicable current final terms and service-provider checks. Raw files are internal research evidence, not a public redistribution pack.

Editorial update on 15 October 2026

The article was rewritten for a more direct editorial voice and incorporates context from John Gapper’s Financial Times opinion column, London’s gold market enjoys the Trump effect, published 15 October 2026. Its reporting is distinguished from Rogha’s interpretation and the issuer-document findings. The FT context does not establish an ETC’s lending policy, a change in backing or a forecast return. Product evidence remains dated 13 October; it was not refreshed for this editorial revision.

Editorial revision and hedging cost check · 15 October 2026

The article now explains the distinction between creation/redemption and a dated bar inventory, operational unallocated balances, and the effect of payment priority and limited recourse. The Invesco Physical Markets prospectus dated 4 June 2026 describes priority claims and extinguishment of shortfalls on printed page 2, with custody and unallocated-account risks discussed later in the prospectus. These are product-specific terms, not a universal payment waterfall for every ETC.

Matched-pair fee check: Invesco Physical Gold ETC (IE00B579F325) and Invesco Physical Gold EUR Hedged ETC (XS2183935274). Their factsheets dated 30 September 2026, checked 15 October, each disclose a 0.12% annual fixed fee. The EUR-hedged factsheet separately discloses a 0.15% annual FX hedge fee. The arithmetic sum, 0.27%, is not labelled TER and does not measure every source of tracking difference, hedge carry or implementation effects. This pair is an illustration, not evidence that every hedged product has the same charge.

Official sources: unhedged September factsheet; EUR-hedged September factsheet; Invesco prospectus. Live URLs may update. Earlier retained-source dates elsewhere in this note still describe the original research.

The revised currency illustration uses hypothetical dollar gold prices and exchange rates quoted as USD per EUR: 4,000 / 1.10 = €3,636.36; 4,400 / 1.20 = €3,666.67; 4,000 / 1.20 = €3,333.33. The original relative-percentage illustration did not depend on the initial exchange-rate level when movements were defined consistently; explicit prices and rates make the conversion easier to follow. These examples exclude product costs.

“Popular” describes the established products selected for this comparison; the sample is not a verified top-five popularity or assets ranking.
