Thematic ETFs: opportunity or investment hype?
The short answer
A thematic ETF invests in companies linked to a trend such as artificial intelligence, clean energy, robotics or cybersecurity. It can provide focused exposure, but it is usually less diversified and more sensitive to changing expectations than a broad-market ETF.
Why it matters
A compelling story does not automatically produce a good investment outcome. A theme can grow while the companies selected by an index perform poorly or were already priced for very high growth.
Thematic indices also make judgement calls about which companies qualify, how strongly they are linked to the theme and how they are weighted.
Some funds include established companies with only limited revenue from the theme. Others concentrate on smaller businesses whose prospects are more uncertain.
A simple example
An artificial-intelligence ETF may own chipmakers, software companies, cloud providers and industrial businesses. Many may already appear in a global or technology ETF.
Buying the thematic ETF could increase exposure to those companies rather than create a completely separate investment.
What to check
- How does the index define the theme?
- What percentage of company revenue must relate to it?
- How many holdings are included?
- Which companies dominate the fund?
- Does it overlap with ETFs you already own?
- Is the fee higher than for a broad-market ETF?
Key term explained
An investment theme is a long-term idea or trend used to select companies across traditional sectors or countries.
Treat the theme as a claim to investigate, not as proof that future returns will be strong.
